The Dormer is a cross between Dorset Horn rams and German Merino.

It was developed at Elsenburg Research Station of the Department of Agriculture over a 10-year period.

The aim was to breed a mutton breed which could adapt to cold wet conditions in South African winters.

The Dormer is said to have high fertility, excellent mothering, a long breeding season and easy lambing.

Distribution is South Africa.
