The Dormer is a cross between Dorset Horn rams and German Merino.
It was developed at Elsenburg Research Station of the Department of Agriculture over a 10-year period.
The aim was to breed a mutton breed which could adapt to cold wet conditions in South African winters.
The Dormer is said to have high fertility, excellent mothering, a long breeding season and easy lambing.
Distribution is South Africa.
