The Awassi evolved as a nomadic breed and has become the highest milk producing breed in the Middle East.
It is a fat-tailed type. A ewe can produce over 300L of milk per 210-day lactation, up to 750L or more.
The lactation of an average non-milk sheep is about 60kh.
The breed is considered naturally hardy with good grazing ability.
Males are horned and females are polled. It has a fleece that produces carpet wool, with some hair.
It is distributed worldwide.
